The Congressman shared his inspiring journey as an Indian-American candidate, speaking openly about how he overcame objections, navigated challenges, and stayed committed to public service throughout his campaign.

🇺🇸 Congressman Suhas Subramanyam (D-VA-10)
Background
Suhas Subramanyam is the U.S. Representative for Virginia’s 10th Congressional District, encompassing Loudoun County and parts of Northern Virginia. Born in Houston, Texas, to Indian immigrants from Bengaluru, he holds a B.A. in philosophy from Tulane University and a J.D. from Northwestern University School of Law. His early career includes roles as a legislative aide in the U.S. House, clerk for the Senate Judiciary Committee, and technology policy advisor in the Obama White House, where he led initiatives on job creation and IT modernization.
n 2019, Subramanyam made history as the first Indian-American, South Asian, and Hindu elected to the Virginia General Assembly. He served in the House of Delegates (2019–2024) and the State Senate (2024) before being elected to Congress in 2024.
Legislative Priorities
Congressman Subramanyam focuses on:
Economic Equity: Advocates for small businesses, federal workers, and infrastructure investments.
Healthcare Access: Supports lowering prescription drug costs and expanding healthcare coverage.
Reproductive Rights: Champions constitutional protections for reproductive freedom and access to IVF.
Gun Safety: Promotes common-sense gun laws to protect communities.
Technology and Oversight: Introduced the LEASH DOGE Act to enhance transparency in federal agencies.
Voting Record
In his first month in Congress, Subramanyam voted for the Laken Riley Act, mandating the detention of undocumented immigrants charged with theft, reflecting a nuanced approach to immigration policy.
He has also co-sponsored legislation on voting rights (John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act), labor protections (PRO Act), and federal employee rights.
