What Can You Do?

Engaging with your elected officials is a powerful way to influence policies that affect the Turkish American community.

Here’s how you can make a meaningful impact:

  1. Contact Your Member of Congress:

    • Express Your Concerns: Reach out to your representative to discuss issues pertinent to Turkish Americans. Personal stories and perspectives can significantly influence their understanding and actions.
    • Encourage Caucus Participation: Urge your representative to join the Congressional Caucus on U.S.-Turkey Relations and Turkish Americans (Turkey Caucus). This bipartisan group focuses on fostering U.S.-Turkey relations and addressing concerns of the Turkish American community. As of June 8, 2023, the Caucus comprises 81 members, including both senators and representatives.
  2. Find Your Representative:

    • Online Tools: Use the official House of Representatives website to identify and obtain contact information for your representative by entering your ZIP code.
    • Direct Contact: If you know your representative but need contact details, the Clerk of the House maintains addresses and phone numbers for all House members and committees. Alternatively, call the U.S. House switchboard at (202) 224-3121 for assistance.
  3. Schedule a Meeting:

    • District Offices: Arrange a visit to your representative’s local office to introduce yourself as a constituent. Discuss the positive contributions of Turkish Americans in your community and highlight any concerns.
    • Build Relationships: Establishing a rapport with your representative and their staff can lead to more effective advocacy and a better understanding of the issues at hand.

By taking these steps, you ensure that the Turkish American perspective is represented in legislative decisions. Your proactive engagement helps counteract negative portrayals and strengthens the U.S.-Turkey partnership. Remember, every constituent’s voice matters—make yours heard!
