Significance of the Name Change to ‘Türkiye
In December 2021, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan issued a presidential circular advocating for the international adoption of “Türkiye” in place of “Turkey.” This initiative aimed to better represent the nation’s culture, civilization, and values. The term “Türkiye” has been used domestically since the country’s declaration as a republic in 1923. The move to standardize this name internationally was also intended to distinguish the country’s identity from the bird of the same name in English.
To formalize this change, the Turkish government sent a request to the United Nations on May 31, 2022, to update the country’s official name in international records. The United Nations promptly approved this request, and on June 1, 2022, “Türkiye” became the country’s recognized name in all UN documents. This decision marked a significant step in reinforcing Türkiye’s distinct national identity on the global stage.
