From Adana to the Stars: Deniz Burnham’s Inspiring Journey into Space
ADANA, Türkiye — Deniz Burnham’s story demonstrates how a life that began in Türkiye can reach the edge of space through determination, education and public service. Born at Incirlik Air Base in Adana, as noted in NASA’s biography, Burnham is now preparing for her first spaceflight.
Burnham was selected for NASA’s astronaut candidate class in 2021 and completed her rigorous training in 2024, joining the ranks of astronauts ready for missions. After earning a degree in chemical engineering and a master’s degree in mechanical engineering, she spent years working in the energy sector, gaining extensive field and operational experience. Her career also includes service as an engineering officer in the U.S. Navy Reserve and experience as a licensed pilot.
According to NASA’s current mission plan, Burnham’s first spaceflight is targeted for March 2027. She is expected to travel aboard the Soyuz MS-30 spacecraft to the International Space Station and spend approximately seven months there as a flight engineer with the Expedition 76 crew. During the mission, she is expected to participate in scientific research and technology demonstrations that could contribute both to life on Earth and to future human missions to the Moon and Mars.
